Easter Sunday
I attended Sunday School until middle school. As I got older, church became “holidays only”, to “only on Christmas”, before landing on “I don’t go to church” in college. Still, I believe that having some faith and spirituality in life is important. And even if I’m not Jesus’ most devout follower, my grandparents might be, and so Easter is a important holiday in my family.
I like Easter. I’d even say it’s an underrated holiday. Sure the kids get to an easter egg hunt and wake up to chocolate and a few dollars, but what the adults get to do is drink mimosas and play cards all day until it’s time for dinner. As you get older you realize that’s a pretty good way to spend a day.
I got a new tattoo this year, and the only time I truly cared what anyone would think about it was this morning driving to my grandma’s house for Easter breakfast. When my grandma saw my first tattoo, a crown on my left hand, she grabbed my fingers, looked at it, and asked “What is that?” in a way that I translated to “Why did you do that to your body?” So, to get an even bigger more visible tattoo on my forearm felt like oh my god my grandma is going to yell at me on Easter.
Thankfully this didn’t happen. And no matter how anxious I get on a car ride to my grandma’s house, the truth is she loves me more than any tattoo.
So that’s nice.
The Gilbert Goons were a topic of conversation through my time here in Arizona. Most recently, a 1000 page police report came out with messages and 911 calls, and my aunt said she even listened to a podcast about the goons, so the story still has a lot of interest here in the east valley and will probably continue to do so until their sentencing.
Outside of Easter, the original reason I came to Arizona was to make a short film. My budget was shoestring, and me and the cast and crew shot in a 2-star motel for 3 days to make the project that I wrote and directed, come to life. I’ll have more on this later in the newsletter. For now, I’ll close this section by saying he is risen. He is risen indeed.
Sunday Songs
No, No, No is a song I heard while driving around with my mom. It’s also the only new song I’ve added to my library this week. A lot of my first memories of music were driving around the valley with her while we were out running errands. So it’s nice to still get that feeling, and be able to have that experience, still, at 26.
Sunday Poll
Sunday Poll. After a democratic vote to save itself, the readers of Pen Sunday and voters in the Sunday Poll edition of the newsletter, voted to continue this segment. I’m not going to lie, I’m a little impressed. I thought the sentiment towards Sunday Poll was at lukewarm at best, but the people have spoken.
Here’s the question of the week.
Voting is free and anonymous. All it takes is a subscription. (That’s free too).
You only have one week to vote. Results will be reviewed and discussed in next week’s edition.

Weekly Announcement:
This week at Studio Jali, I directed a short film that I wrote. I thought I’d have more time to talk about it, but it’s only 8 minutes until Monday and I can’t be late. Anything within 24 hours of Sunday is fair game. That’s the rule.
I’ve been asked in the past, “Why don’t you write it throughout the week so you can publish it early every Sunday?” This sounds like good advice, but one of the big parts about Pen Sunday is that it’s written and published every Sunday. Meaning, some Sundays I’m busier than others and the only time I have to write it is after all the days events have ended and I make time for it.
So because this is another short newsletter, I will make it up to al the Pen Sunday readers next week with a full length quality edition. Of what? I don’t know yet. We’ll find out next Sunday.
PS
It’s the end of Pen Sunday, edition #74. If you reached the end, thank you for reading. It means a lot.
Pen Sunday is a newsletter about a writer, a dream, and a studio. With headlines from around the world, music, and maybe a poem. Every Sunday and Sunday only.
Until Sunday,
